Shalom,

How do you proceed?

Get Linux supported hardware.

Compaq laptop linux support on the low end is non-existant.

You might also try a newer Linux.

SEP

The install is probably hanging because of ACPI device detection. I had this exact problem with mine.

Try interrupting the boot at the installation menu and then select the kernel and press 'a' to append to the selection, then add:

noacpi noapm apm=no acpi=no

I've put both arg types as I can't remember which worked, however just put them all as GRUB will simply ignore any wrong ones.

Now boot the kernel and everything should be fine. If it still hangs then there are some other arguments you can add.

Any specific reason for using RedHat Linux 8?

If no, then I would recommend using some recent Linux distributions like Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint, etc.

These can be tried from the Live CD (without installing) so you can be sure that it works with your laptop before installing.

Do you really mean RedHat 8??? Or you possibly mean Fedora 8? If you're really trying to use RH8, I'm not surprised it doesn't load on lots of things, even old things. Chances on that revisions were about 75 or 80% that it would load back then on whatever hardware you had handy. Meaning it worked fine a lot of times, but it didn't work on a lot of systems too!

Recommendations: Fedora 7 or 8, Ubuntu 7.10, Simply Mepis, OpenSuse maybe. Fedora 8 will look like more of what you're used to, Ubuntu is going to look a bit more strange (to you) underneath, like a Debian system. Ubuntu has a great track record (to me anyways) of being able to run in most anything and working great. The only problem I had at first with it was being surprised about how different it is under the hood (no init levels!).
