We recently purchased a 42U cabinet with a Compaq R3000 UPS installed at it's bottom. The batteries were dead so we replaced all 16 of them. After the batteries were replaced the unit would power up. We ordered the recommended cable to interface the Proliant DL380 with the UPS. We are running CentOS 5 Linux and the apcupsd package. The config file for apcupsd is set for a simple cable connected via /dev/ttyS0. When we launch apcupsd /var/log/messages records a single line:
Feb 26 13:02:07 mako apcupsd[10033]: apcupsd 3.14.2 (15 September 2007) redhat startup succeeded

but running apcaccess returns the report below.
The UPS has been plugged in for eight days and the only load is the DL380. Why would the software be reporting LOWBATT?
Can someone post a link to the protocol and speed settings to interface with the UPS via the Linux machine's serial port?

APC : 001,019,0505
DATE : Tue Feb 26 13:02:14 EST 2008
HOSTNAME : mako
RELEASE : 3.14.2
VERSION : 3.14.2 (15 September 2007) redhat
UPSNAME : Compaq
CABLE : Custom Cable Simple
MODEL : DUMB UPS Driver
UPSMODE : Stand Alone
STARTTIME: Tue Feb 26 13:02:07 EST 2008
STATUS : ONLINE LOWBATT
MBATTCHG : 5 Percent
MINTIMEL : 3 Minutes
MAXTIME : 0 Seconds
NUMXFERS : 0
TONBATT : 0 seconds
CUMONBATT: 0 seconds
XOFFBATT : N/A
STATFLAG : 0x07000048 Status Flag
END APC : Tue Feb 26 13:02:14 EST 2008

Ok. I went to APC's site, downloaded the .bin installer but it errored out with Java problems. I installed Java Runtime, modified my path, logged in again and verified it was in the path but the installed failed with the same error. I then opted to download and install the .RPM version. That said it installed but did not give me any info as to what man page to view or commands do run to interact with the UPS. I looked at APC's site and couldn't find anything there either. Can someone tell me what the man page is so I can get this thing going?

here is what i see as instruction
Java 1.4 have to be installed. To verify:

$ rpm -q j2re
j2re-1.4.2_08-fcs
Install directory is /opt/pcns221 and it allocate 4.7 MiB after installation.

Installer (as root) requires X so set DISPLAY and ensure it is working.

Installer uses java so insert java bin directory into PATH temporarily:

# PATH=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_08/bin:$PATH
