Shalom,

I was forced by wifi/hardware support to Migrate my laptop(toshiba) from Fedora to Ubuntu.

HP does not design its low end laptops with Linux in mind. In fact, they do quite the opposite most of the time.

I'm a total newbie with Ubuntu (RHCE, see itrc profile). I've gotten through every issue on Ubuntu thus far with google searches. I literally copy the commands cut and paste from the docs I find and 9 times out of ten I get good results on everything the first time.

Ubuntu makes more effort on the hardware support side.

Fedora does have a program to let you upload your hardware profile. If they get enough customers with the same hardware, they may decide to support it in later kernels.

SEP

Built in microphone on dv6000z not functioning

See below for specs.

Ok so I have my new Laptop. It works, which is good. There are a few niggles the last of which is getting the microphone and irda functioning. I am interested in the mic more than the irda atm but so far no joy.

The first thing I did when I got it was to install Fedora 7 which works. You need to add a couple of switches to your kernel boot options or you may get crashes.

Just add this "noapic nolapic irqfixup" to the end of the kernel line. When at grub boot, hit "e" and then cursor down to the line begining with kernel .... hit “e” again and type it in. once you have the machine booted edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and add the switches to your kernel(s)

Wireless
To get Wifi running use ndiswrapper with the drivers for windows XP from hp support, I used “sp34152.exe”, for your laptop. You should be using the version with bcmwl5.inf I could not get bcmwl6.inf, from vista, to function properly. Check the following site for more information

http://www.dogruel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=38

Webcam
To get the webcam functioning download and install the r5u870 driver located at the following site

http://lsb.blogdns.net/software

Be sure to use v4l2 plugin in ekiga. The webcam does not fuction properly with v4l. The v4l drivers seem to be the default for most other video conferencing systems. Xawtv and mplayer both work with the webcam. Many of the other netmeeting/players have no or buggy support for v4l2 atm.

Microphones
The mic does not seem to be functioning. I tried altering the kmix settings and installed the alsamixer both indicate that the internal and external mics are available and functioning. When I try to use them in audacity or ekiga I get no audio. I may just get another webcam with mic but I would really like to get the included bits working. Any help getting the internal mics functioning would be appreciated.

Irda
I have not worked with the irda as of yet. Would be nice to get the handy remote functioning though.

GNULinux distros
I have install both Fedora 7 and Ubuntu/Kubuntu 7.04 and both work well. I prefer Fedora as I am more familiar with the ins and outs of the distro. I can see where new GNULinux users will like Ubuntu.

HP Pavilion dv6000z

AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-56(1.8GHz/1MB)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
512MB DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150 w/Productivity Ports
HP Imprint Finish + Microphone + Webcam
802.11a/b/g/n (draft 802.11n) WLAN and Bluetooth
80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support

Shot these as soon as I got the machine. Wish I could have gotten a refund for them.

Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
