Linux web editing tools.

For years I've been a vi person. Thats how I work on websites.

For a lot of things this does really well.

For creating a nice consistent look and feel, not really so good.

The people I used to hire back in the US to do websites used windows and dreamweaver. It costs bucks and running windows does not appeal to me.

So. What are the good tools for wysiwig web page development for Linux? What do you use, why and where to I get it.

I prefer rpm based software but understand this may not be possible.

Centos 4 update 4 is my preferred platform. Its really RedHat.

Have you tried Nvu - http://www.nvu.com/index.php ?

I personally dont have any experience with that but is look good for web design.

When I messed with Quanta long ago it seemed pretty good. Requires that you have KDE installed, though. Its current home is http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/. I haven't used it in years so I can't really comment on its current state.

As a side note, a WYSIWYG editor is often not a very good way to get a consistent look and feel - compare documents prepared in LaTeX or SGML to those done in Word for example. You might want to look for some kind of templating system or move your formatting to common CSS files. Some HTML editors will help with one or both, others won't.

Stuart,

I need to setup templates and need a gui tool for that. I will not stop using vi but its useless for look and feel issues.

Anyone use openoffice.org? If so, how do you like it and is there a guide on how to use it. Its a bit confusing to me at this point.

I have tried a few (quanta, openoffice) but prefere bluefish... seem's more fun more ease to learn yet very complete ... but this is realy a how do you like your tea with or without milk etc.

a " #yum install bluefish " should install this rpm

I found you could learn to use this relatively fast and the small book help icon is a value to me, also the translation in french is good, and you can configure to use your preferences

Hope you know about a major mode in Emacs called "html-helper-mode". You may use that if you have swithced from Vi to Emacs.

I am satisfied with the results of this thread thus far. I won't close it because you never know six months from now somebody might have a better idea.

If you want WYSIWYG, bluefish is not a WYSIWYG editor. They state this specifically on their website. It does look to be a good editing tool. NVU IS a WYSIWYG editor. I have played about with it, and it seems quite adept.

I may end up playing with both.

I certainly think I can do better than I have in the past on websites, even if they never get outside my Corporate LAN at work in Jerusalem.
