ll /var/mail/root

Is it there, does it have bytes?

vi /etc/aliases

See if root mail is being redirected to a REAL user.

output?

Use mail on that system to send a message to root. Tell us what you see, and show us some of the files we asked for.

also, make sure that sendmail is running on the machine
