Can you telnet into this machine?

I have to wonder if any other files besides the fstab were deleted.

When you run mount -v, what output do you get?

You might also try running a mount -a. This will mount all filesystems.

Maybe your /home partition is not mounted, post the contents of your /etc/fstab file and the results of the mount command.

Check the contents of the /etc/mnttab or
/etc/mtab. This should list the mounted
partitions. Start rebuilding your fstab
by copying this to fstab. Fix the formatting,
and remove any automount entries.

Check fdisk -l /dev/hda, and repeat for
all your disks. This will list available
partitions. Check and see if they are all
mounted. Mount any unmounted partions
on /mnt and see if you want them mounted.
If so add them to /etc/fstab.

Mount any additions with mount -a.
