DL360 & Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 4

HP DL360 G4P Single processor with U320 SCSI interface with 2 36GB htp swap drives.

I set up the raid with HP SmartStart to Raid 1+0 but when I try to install the OS I only can see 1 drive during the installation script.

What have I done wrong!

You have done nothing wrong.

When you set up raid 1, only a single drive is presented to the operating system.

You did good.

Do the installation, have fun.

Thank you for the prompt reply and am reassured to know that I am on the right track as I am new to setting up a system with RAID.

OS install complete - no problem.

Both drives seem to work in unison but is there a master, if so how can I tell which one it is and are the drives hot swappable?

You need no muster.
In case 1 hard drive fails (no matter which)-you'll continue working on the server.

You need more than 2 disks for hot swap (HPDL 380) for example.

OK, I powered off the system and removed the LHS drive - system would not boot. Replaced the LHS drive and removed the RHS drive and again would not boot. Replaced both drives and now will not boot. HP SmartStart informs me that I do now not have any hard drives at all!

Gday,

There should be some message in the POST boot stage about the RAID array, generally around the time of the controller testing. There should be an F1/F2 on is to continue operating with the failed unit not available - this will result in no disks the other is to correct the situation.

As for additional disks, if you use the smartstart software you can raid 1+0 and then physically partition it into Logical Units (LUNS) as required, although for 36GB this is probably not required as LINUX allows 14 partitions per disk.

Also, it seems that after installing the OS, do not reboot straight away as the disks will take a while to fully sync. If they have not done so, the system could fail after pulling a drive. We have experienced that before.

Install the HP health app, as the command hplog -v will show any drive issues (failures, bad RAID 1, etc).
