NFS is standard and you can share with any Unix without major problems.

But for windows, you need a NFS client to be able to "mount" or view the NFS exports.

Hi Xperts,

This is a general but a silly question.

I have a doubt in my mind whether we can share a NFS Share among different operating systems....I mean in a heterogenous environment having different Unix & Linux flavours and Windows, is it really possible to share a nfs mount.

As per my knowledge, we do not face any problem while doing the same among different Unix and Linux servers but my question is "Can we do that with Windows or not...??"

I know this will not be possible but still wanted advice from XPERTS......

TIA

Atul

NFS can be shared among different unixes.
There is also a PC/nfs client.

You should ensure you have the same uids and
gids for the shared resources on all servers
sharing the resources.

Sharing to Windows is usually done with Samba.

LDAP and/or NIS can help in ensuring the
uids are syncronized.
As for MS Windows and NFS - there are some commercial NFS software (from Hummingbird, for example). As far as I know, MS UNIX Services include NFS server/client.

Ivan/Bill/Vitaly,

Do we have any service in MS Windows itself that actually recognises NFS shares.......m not aware of windows but if you know then you can enlighten me.

Thanks!

Atul

Shalom,

Answer to your last post.

No.

Windows does not support NFS mounts. It is quite good at supporting Linux server samba shares.

I generally have my Linux boxes do the NFS thing among one and other and have windows connect to a samba share on the same data. It works well.

SEP
