I had the same problem and solved it by mapping the CD in VMWare to the iso image of the RH9 CD2 on my hard drive. It then succeded in reading it.
(Edit->Virtual Machine Settings->CD Rom->Use ISO Image)
sorry for two replies
after you copy the iso image to disk you can mount it with loop option so you/coputer can work with it's contents
let's say you copied the image(you've got 3 images because there are 3 installation disks) under /root
issue this command
mount -o loop /root/isoimage /mnt/cdrom
and then try to continue with the installation from cd...
Hope it helps.
Best regards.

Download the ISO images of the redhat CD:s (3 for redhat 9.0), or just the one you have problems with (CD2).
Check www.redhat.com for where to download from.
In VMWare select "Edit"->"Virtual Machine Settings..." for the machine you are trying to install in. Select CD-Rom in the hardware list. Under "Connection" on the right side select "Use ISO Image" and click "Browse.." to select the image you downloaded. VMWare will now map this as the content of the CD-Rom inside your virtual machine.
Don't forget to switch back to "Use physical drive" when you are done so that you can access other CD:s from within your virtual machine.
