knoppix wont find modem

i've been screwing around with knoppix and i cant get my modem to dial, i went to my isp and got instructions to set up a connection and everything but I cant get it to connect, it just hangs at "initializing modem" Do i need drivers? a device file? is my modem not linux compatible? I really dont know,

what modem you have? there are so many winmodems available on the market (also called as softmodems) which are not supported in linux.

If its a winmodem, linmodems.org is pretty much the only solution that will work.

Knoppix has fairly good hardware support, so your best bet is to get drivers for linux from the modem manufacturer.
