Suse usually recognises far more devices than Redhat and so is normally a much better bet for laptops.

That is a tricky proposition.

The answer is probably yes, though you should do research so you know who provided the video card/chipset and the modem.

HP laptops are relatively famous for giving Linux installation/admins trouble getting started.

Before you start, make sure you do your homework and have linux drivers at the ready.

SEP

I'll suggest to install something newer than RH9, something like Fedora Core 4 ...

Alex.

I'm not recommend Suse.
FC 4 is ok if you not going to $$ for RH ES 4.
Suse has also gone open-source, and there is now a no-cost version available from www.opensuse.org.

I do prefer to use Redhat as I am more familiar with the commands, and there are more things available in the US, however I can almost gaurantee that you will run into hardware issues with a Compaq/HP laptop. I have been running Suse for a long time, first on my old Pavillion N5430, and now on my NV400 widescreen, and Suse supports everything except the Winmodem.

On the wireless front 9.3 also supports Windows 2000/XP AES encryption rather than just WEP as Redhat does.
