(Sendmail) is the easiest to install and configure; the latest version is considered to be secure enough, and has a lot of advanced features.

(PostFix) is simple to install but doesn't provide the advanced features of QMAIL or SENDMAIL.

(Qmail) is considered to be the second most popular MTA,and seems to be very secure. Installation is difficult but once installed needs very few maintenance actions.

(Maildirs)

(Courier) Good IMAP Server

UNSURE mailservers:
(IMP) and (Squirrelmail)

Here it is a Sendmail versus Qmail benchmark:
http://www.benchmarks.dmz.ro/article.php?story=20020711175408345

http://www.benchmarks.dmz.ro/index.php?topic=LinMSB

Here some useful link for you:
http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/linux-hn/sendmail.htm

Regards,
Alex

Sendmail can easily handle hundreds of thousands of accounts. As far as performance goes, a sendmail is the leader of the pack, as far as knowledge, securability and other factors.

Any normal server cluster can handle a lot of sendmail users. The important factor is that there is enough memory in /var to handle all the temporary mail traffic and storage.

Other things to think about include access method. Do you want to use imapd, secure imapd, pop, or secure popmail.

Also understand that if this mail server runs any web based sendmail forms they must be secure.

SEP
