Yesterday, I went to Linuxforum here
in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This is the yearly event for Linux/BSD/Open
source people in this area.

One of the developers at HP gave a presentation
there.

The hpasm tool, which controls the fans and
lets you query the state of powersupplies, etc., is available now for BSD.

I don't run BSD, so unfortunately I didn't
write down the URL, but it should be available
"real soon" at hp.com

HP ProliantDL320 has a fun system, that default run full stream and
creates a lot of noise. Problem in that the system does not find
ACPI devices or other similar devices which could operate with fan
system.
FreeBSD 5.x comes with some acpi support but I think that is not to the extent of controlling fans.

the right place for Your question would be the freebsd-questions mailing list:
http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions

please attach important parts of a dmesg created by booting with boot -v to Your question.

If this feature is not yet implemented and it exists on linux, You might well file a problem report to make developers aware of the problem.

I don't think that you'll be able to manage fans from freebsd, but you can control them using utilities from Proliant SmartCD.

Rgds,
Vitaly
