I've tried http://www.cygwin.com/

It works well, but not as well as hummingbird. There is value added for the $500 license for hummingbird.

Something to consider: X Windows client that does not use ssh(openssh secure shell) for connectivity transmits authentication in clear text.

SEP

Cygwin has an X server with it that I used for years without issue ;)

http://www.cygwin.com/

The most recent releases come with the XOrg X-Server (as against XFree86).

It's capable of doing full-screen and root windows (and I believe also root-less windows).

You can also install vnc (http://www.realvnc.com/) on the unix-box and view this with the windows viewer or even with the java viewer. This obsoletes the installation of an entire X11-server on M$Windows, however, the vnc-server-installation on unix has various ways for various usages.

Most major current linux distributions come with 1 or 2 packages for vnc. Pick them from your distro and install them for a workable configuration.
