OS won't find Ultrium 460. On boot, BIOS finds that device, but OS can't see it. Module st is loaded ok, but status is unused.

I take it the tape is external, and attached to the onboard SmartArray RAID controller?

If so, take a quick read of '/usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-*/cciss.txt', inparticular the section about engaging the SCSI devices.

The short of it is the following for loop:

for x in /proc/driver/cciss/cciss[0-9]*
do
echo "engage scsi" > $x
done

Once that is done, take a look in '/proc/scsi/scsi' to see if any 'Sequential Access' devices exist. This will mean that your tape drive is showing it's self properly to the OS.

The most common problem here is scsi address conflict. Make sure the drive itself is not on scsi id 0 because the scsi card is using that. You might try a different address.

I'm pretty sure after drive install that this device, if working should show up on hardware scans.
