Linux isn't an option as a cell manager for Omniback/Data Protector. Unless it happened in the last few days :)

I'm not entirely sure it would be a great idea yet anyway.

Omniback can backup up Linux servers as follows:

Open up the Linux server to NFS or Samba, create a connection to that server via NFS or Samba from a valid Omniback client(Windows,HP-UX) and you can back up any folder you make available by NFS or Samba. Samba is better for security.

I'm looking at my Data Protector 5.1 CD's and there is not a Linux pack, so my solution is the only one that will work.

SEP

linux agent support has been available for some time already. works great, and you don't need nfs/samba crazyness.

there is still no linux server port though, a shame really. I wonder what is keeping them.

I don't understand the argument of huc that 'it might not be a good idea yet', since it is available on NT, I don't see why a linux-only shop for example should be forced to introduce a NT machine or a bigger Unix machine into their organisation.

Dirk,

Don't blame Huc! it was me.

I do not think that the 2.4.* kernel or previous is as good a platform for that kind of throughput as an HP-UX box. Of course, if you only have a small shop then it would probably be fine but why spend the money on Data Protector in that case. Don't get me wrong, a bigger fan of Linux than me probably doesn't exist (I have been using it as my sole platform at home since late '94) but there are still limits.

Wait for 2.6.10 and then I'll start cheering for the cell manager on Linux!

I agree with Dirk, If the "powers to be" are going to support linux, the port should occure for the smaller customer as a test bed if noting else.. Why wait..?
Not sure even for big shops, that the through put would be satisfactory for a dedicated backup system, handling M$, HP-UX and Linux clients..
I have 64 license system that I don't think would be taxed..
