Hi,
Kudzu is Red Hta hardware detection tool, it detects your ntfs partition at boot time.

The word itself meaning is hard to guess, Red Hat team is known to find strange names to their tools (rh9 is called 'shrike' for example: why ?)

J

I have a guess
perhaps kudzu means 9,10 in japanis
ku for 9 and dzu for 10
that's all I remember from my karate lessons.

My understanding was that 9 was 'kyuu', and 10 was 'ju' *pulls out text book* ok, 'ku' or 'kyuu' are valid for 9.

The sound 'd' on it's own doesn't exist in the japanese spelling/language that I'm aware of (da,de,do only).. but then again, my Japanese sucks :P

Kudzu as listed by a dictionary says it's an East Asian vine (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=kudzu).

Annoyingly enough, not the home page (http://rhlinux.redhat.com/kudzu/) or even the source of Kudzu has anything in it to say what it's supposed to mean beyond "hardware detection".

Kudzu is a name of a plant/vine that was used in North Carolina (home of Red Hat's Head Qtrs.) during the 50's 60's to help stop erosion on road sides and farming areas. The Kudzu spread out of control taking over every thing is sight and is difficult to kill. Kudzu can still be seen in many areas.

Right Michael,

Reading over RG IRC posts, it seems thta the RH team loved the idea of this plant going everywhere, spreading, and they called the tool doing the same thing to discover hardware...

Don't ask me what they drink, sure there's no Guiness down there...

J

Hi Jerome,

There's plenty of Guiness down here! I live in Charlotte and I just had some last night. Here in North Carolina we have Red Hat, we have lots of kudzu, and we have plenty of Guiness. :)

JP
Hello!

Read this you will have a lot info about kudzu

http://www.maitreg.com/south/articles/kudzu.asp

So RH like this discription because the tool
should check every thing on the computer (every place/hw) so that's the name.

Caesar
