you can also try the "crossover" plugin, which is so much better than wine.
It lets you to install office2000, IE, Windows media player for example. For more information go there:
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/

Wine works really well with little Windows applications. About complex programs, the only thing you can do is... try. Remember that there are a lot of possible configurations for wine.

There is useful Wine Application Database (http://appdb.winehq.org) that contains informations about a lot of Win applications, how they run in Wine, and how to configure Wine to get them work.

give a look http://www.winehq.com. There's a new updated Wine every 2/3 months.

Ciao
Claudio

Hi,

There is also vmware, that really launches the other OS, and which is therefore very stable (as stable as windows :]] ) :
http://www.vmware.com/download/

The only thing is that you are supposed to pay to use it...
J

i would suggest you to try crossover office. this is developing fast and the no of applications it supports is growing.

it is not a free (beer) product, but when u have the money to buy M$ this isnt very costly :-)

but still i dont understand why would one want to run a Win32 app on linux. i can understand if this is for a desktop where that only app is the bottle neck from u switching to windows. but otherwise?

and u degrade ur performance by running something which doesnt run natively on ur box. for such cases u are better of running a windows box with cygwin. sorry to say so!

-balaji

A look at the Office alternatives is called for.

No matter what you run, even launching the other OS, there is a significant performance hit that you will have to take.

I do understand the need to run certain Windows Apps. One of my web sites, collects stock market data based on web based features of Office 2000.

Thats pretty hard functionality to replace, though I'd like too.

Fortuneately, hardware is cheap these days, and I have an old Dell 200 MegaHertz box dedicated to the collection of this data. Thats better than degrading the performance of my Linux box(imho).

SEP
Hi,

Thanks for the reply guys,

I need to run Win32 apps on Linux because of some Arabic apps. Linux is way behind in Arabic. Hancom and HayderLinux are doing a good job but, they time to be stable and cover all areas...

Also some games are still windows based..

Also I might need to run Multimedia apps such MediaBlaze, Graphics Converters and Audio Converters.........

I will try my best to stick to Linux and gradually move from Windows as my personal primary desktop/platform as soon as possible...

Thanks again,,,,,,

Hello!

The wine for today is the best that exist.
You should check the option of use the
Virtual machine (vmware) and run windows
on then you could run the win32 apps

Check the http://www.vmware.com/
for more info

Caesar

I agree with Jerome a Caesar. VMWare is absolutely a great way to use Windows (OS and applications) in a linux box. I use it everyday and I haven't found 1 application that don't work. Performances are really good, too. But it isn't free.
I know the existence of a vmware-like open source tool, named 'bochs'. But I don't know how good it is.

Ciao
Claudio
