Yes you can do it.

You are probably better off using a product like partion magic, or doing the Linux install on a second disk.

If you are careful you will lose no data.

With the flood of high quality used hardware out there, I just get a box for experiments. My employer recently dumped a bunch of 450 MegaHertz Pentium II boxes for $50 a unit.

I get my up to date Linux stuff at:
http://www.redhat.com

SEP

Hello!

What you need is to install the linux on free
partiton and install the boot loader (lilo/grub) on the MBR and then add the option
to boot the windows OS.

If you have fast connection then you can download the linux from site of distributor.
If no then you can buy for about 20$-60$ depend on the distribution.

Caesar

Hello

Yes do it you will learn a lot and probably have fun in the process, but make sure you have a good backup of your impotany data/os before you start.
The best is probably an extra disk that way you avoid the dificulty of shrinking your present partitions, and shopping around you should find lots of cheap disk.

I would stick to distribution like RedHat, Mandrake or Suse because there installation is quite easely done, and if you take the time about it you should be alright, plus there is lot of helpfull people around the net that will respond to your questions, what ever distribution you take be sure to read the section about supported hardware.

make a list of all your hardware and setup from bios and from windows and have this nearby for the first reboot and during install, you may need it.

In short it should not cost you to much and you risk learning a lot and probably have fun in the process.

Perhaps around you there is someone that already has done this, mayby you could enrole his or her help ? ...

Jean-Pierre.

Yes... this is fairly easy (fairly) to do.

One utility I recomment getting your hands on is Partition Magic. You can use this to resize the windows partition on your computer. If you don't need to re-partition then don't worry about that step. Next download your prefered LInux distribution. I prefer Red Hat. This can be downloaded for free from http://www.redhat.com

After you burn the ISO images to CD's boot off the CD and follow the on screen instructions to install Linux. It's pretty straight forword.

Good luck!
