What kind of network connection do you have? Are you talking about joining an existing network or using a dialup/ADSL kind of connection to the internet.

Hello,
I'm looking to join a network already containing a few thousand users. I have the LAN Line plugged in from the server to the wall. I'm just not sure everything I need to do in order to get a connection to FTP out and what not. Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks

kyle

You need to know if the network uses DHCP or not. If not, then you need the network administrator to assign you a static IP address.

Within Red Hat there are probably hundreds of little non-standard scripts you can run to connect to a DHCP server but in fact all you need to do is run "dhcpd" somewhere in your startup scripts something like "dhcpd -t 10 -d eth0".

If you need to get a static IP address from the network administrator, you'll also need the netmask and somewhere in your startup scripts put

ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Those "xxx"'s should be replaced with your IP address and netmask.
