I have this omni510 with 128M of RAM. From specs I understand that the graph adapter *shares* memory with RAM. At boot time it address automatically through bios 512K, 1024K or 8M of RAM (it is not clear the differences within this 3 cases...may be the onboard RAM).
The problem is that it address only 1024K and the linux driver is not capable to change this value. I suppose that a BIOS UPGRADE is needed to allow this kind of setting at user level.
I currently running kern 2.4.18 and XFree86 v4.2.

Any one of you have succefully solve this problem?
I've heard this is a Linux driver problem (no driver exists for this). Hp does not seem to have a Linux driver for this laptop's graphics adapter.

I think you will have to write your own graphics driver, or try a newer laptop.

Good luck

The graphics card is fully supported under XFree4.2...

I'm told its the BIOS thats
the limiting factor here...
I've tried all this things. I think that the only alternative way to vesa modes is a BIOS UPDATE...that is what intel say:

BIOS
The video memory available for this driver is limited by the amount of memory set aside for use as video memory by the BIOS. If there is an option to select the amount of video memory in the BIOS, set this to 8 MB. If the BIOS sets aside less than 8 MB, the video modes available for use in Linux may be limited. A BIOS update for the laptop may be available from the system manufacturer to enable up to 8MB of system memory for use as video memory

Is the HP that have to provide us a BIOS UPDATE!
(or HP stops to support linux?)

Yes, I tried but the BIOS v1.01 is what I obtain as built in version with the portable...and is not enough. I still cannot allocate manually video ram.

Well, I solved the problem, but not in the most preferred way:

Xi (http://www.xig.com) makes a commercial X server that fully supports the i830 chipset (and fully ignores the BIOS). It works pretty well on the 510.

It works.
With new BIOS 1.42 and with XFree 4.3, there is no problem to have a full graphical environment.
You must use i810 native module.
You dont need to use i830-16bit.C program.
;-)
