I'm afraind we don't have enoguh information to help you.
*) What Apache version? 1.3.X? or 2.X?
*) Can you tell us what error message you received in the error_log? (probably in the /var/log/httpd directory)
*) If there are no special error messages in that logfile, try increasing the debuglevel. You can change that by editing your httpd.conf file:

###
LogLevel debug
###

rgrds,

Bart

Usually there is a tool called apachectl to start and stop apache.
- Edit your httpd.conf (in /etc/httpd or /etc/apache) to fit your needs. For the first start up there is not very much to edit. Make sure no other process is listening on your server port (default 80), set the server name.
- Run 'apachectl start' from the command line.
- Check error_log (usually in /var/log/httpd) for errors.
- Also check /var/log/messages for httpd errors.

Hope this helps, if not, please provide the error messages from error_log and /var/log/messages.
And by the way, what Linux are you running ?
