Hello,

Before I got frustrated and sold my HP Pavilion ze4101, I did work around the internal modem issue with an external modem, a U.S. Robotics 56k modem worked just fine, except it tied up my phone line.

I really wanted to use the ethernet connection under Red Hat 8 to a router and DSL service.

I was not successful with the ethernet but the external modem worked well.

I urge you to get an external modem and connect it to your serial port.

John Kohler

I don't think there is one.
I tried in the past for the same modem type on another flavour of Linux (Mandrake), but could only find support for '95, '98 and NT.
Just checked the USR support pages and this bears me out.

I haven't checked on that specific model number BUT....

I'll bet you've got a "Winmodem" which is a piece of crippled garbage hardware that cannot function without Windows.

Even under Windows, it creates a significant performance drag on your system. Throw it out and spring for a real modem and you'll be happier no matter which OS you use.

HTH,
Paul

You can't use that modem with Linux (Windows only).
I am having the same issue with a HP Pavilion, where HP put a "PCTel WorldMicro Modem" in, which is is very annoying.

Modules are available for some 'winmodems'. They have to do most of the work in the kernel at real time priority. It depends on the chip set, and whether the manufacturer is co-operative.

Check the Linux Laptop site.
