Is Linux, Redhat a good replacement for an old 735 workstation?

I use rlogin to login to HP-UX servers, can linux do rlogins? what about dtterm, should the Linux machine be running kde or gnome?

Can I send print jobs from the linux machine to the HP-UX print server?

Can I install the Omniback disk agent on linux?

Can I install the Omniback cell console on linux?

I assume Linux comes with netscape?

Even a low-powered (200-300 Mhz) Pentium-class system would make a suitable replacement for the 735. I would recommend selecting a system carefully. Make sure that the components you need are supported under Linux.

Yes, rlogin is included with most (if not all) Linux distributions.

The desktop you use is simply a matter of personal preference.

Most character-based applications which work within dtterm should work equally as well using xterm, GNOME terminal, KDE terminal, etc, with TERM=ansi.

I've yet to find a Linux distribution that does not include Netscape 4.x. There are also other browsers available such as Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera, and others.

I can't answer any of your Omniback questions, as I am not very familar with that product.

Linux would be more than suitable as a replacement for your 735. However, it will require a lot more involvement to make it work. Depending on the version, Linux comes with everything and the kitchen sink. Gnome, KDE, ipchains (packet filtering), ssh, cdrecored, databases, you name it...

It will require more interaction on your part however to make sure that everything is secure and installed properly.

I think it would be a very good choice.

You can definitely rlogin to a HP server and DISPLAY X-windows back. Although I'd recommend using SSH instead and the whole X session would be encrypted.

I believe Netscape comes with most Linux distributions, Redhat for sure.
Printing will work as described above, Omniback is available, though not sure about Cell.

KDE or GNOME really doesn't matter, your choice. It doesn't affect any of your other questions.

You can use OmniBack to perform file system backups as long as the Linux server in located in your Intranet. The documentation says that no firewall can be in between the cell server and the Linux OmniBack client. The Linux machine also needs to have a tape device locally attached - network backups are not supported. The cell server has to be running either HP-UX, Solaris, or NT. Linux cannot be a cell server. This info applies to OmniBack II version 3.5. I have not tested the 4.0 version with Linux clients yet so things may be different now.
