Have you tried using the 'cdrecord' packages of which come with most modern distributions of Linux?

If not, I'd suggested getting the latest build and trying it!

The documentation it comes with should be sufficient to configure it and get it working (mainly requiring the 'IDE-SCSI' emulation for the device).

What have you tried so far?

1) Does there exist any application already capable of driving this product (installed as secondary IDE Master)

2) Are there any guidelines for using this product under LINUX (Suse 7.3)

My objective is using the DVD+RW as a backup system. I am looking at this moment to such CD-roaster packages but I am afraid they will not provide the right formatting utilities (information) I need.

Meanwhile I found the site of the DVD+RW alliance 'http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/links.html' with a link to Chalmers University (Sweden) where some tools are made available : 'http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/'. I'll come back with feedback.

If you are looking at it as a backup solution, you might also want to look at some of the commercial backup packages (such as Backup Edge from www.microlite.com). Their software has the ability to use DVD-RAM drives, but I've not yet tried it.

They have a 30 day demo download (of the v1.20 packages), so give it a shot. See how it goes.
