I have just purchased the above HP machine, and unable to get the following devices working under SuSE 7.0:

Sound Card: Rip Tide (who?)
Network Card: HP 10/100MB
Modem: Rockwell Winmodem..

I don't hold much hope for the Winmodem, but does anybody have any suggestions for getting the sound or the NIC to work?? I have set the System type to "Other" in the BIOS...

Simon,

The Rockwell WinModem is a Windoze Software Modem, so you have no hope there.

The RipTide Sound Card is another issue. Since I do not have this model of the HP Pavilion, I cannot guarantee it, but I had to replace the card with the Ensoniq 1371. However, just in case, here's the Sound HOWTO http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.html

Also there are Sound Drivers Available for Various Sound Cards. You can find more information about the Open Sound System Drivers at http://www.opensound.com/osshw.html and yes they do appear to suuport the Riptide cards.

Lastly, it appears that you will need to add the entry:
alias eth0
in the /etc/conf.modules card.

The ethernet driver is the type which is supported for your controller. Since I do not have this Server, you'll need to find out the card that HP Ships in the system and then find the supported driver from the following: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html

That should easily resolve all of your problems, if not let me know.

Thanks Albert..

I managed to get the Network Card working - the sound card I will probably end up replacing with a YaST supported unit, like a Soundbaster PCI or the like. The Opensound software costs more than it would to buy a replacement sound card!!

You have to enable your parallel card in the bios...you might also have to set your pic slot that the card resides in to master bus enabled...you might have to disable the parallel port when u run windows
