HP lose RedHat to IBM

Hi all,

In the media today about HP positioning itself with Linux as a complete solution, which is great, but that HP has lost out to IBM in signing up RedHat as its distributor.

So, which other flavour of RedHat will it be ? anybody know ? Just after having spent months getting to grips with RedHat and now have to learn another flavour, great.

I know how you feel about different versions of Linux ....

However, I am going to root for Linux-Mandrake! Since I've switched from the slow to market RedHat to the advanced and updated Linux-Mandrake, my servers appears to be significantly faster.

Not to mention that all of my customers seem to appreciate the Windowed environment. I personally have found KDE extremely easy to use and configure!

I'm hoping that since HP supports KDE that they will look to Linux-Mandrake .... they are a sleeper in the industry!

Did you know that Mandrake leads RedHat in distributions????

Hi Albert,

thanks for the info. Funny, Mandrake is now No. 1 in the US and SusE linux is No. 1 in Europe.

I shall get Mandrake installed and see what its like. SusE also uses KDE and yes it looks great. Use it all the time on my PC at home.

Lets keep our eyes posted and see who HP eventually signup.

I know that more and more I install Linux in places that people never invisioned it going Before! It certainly is much more reliable than any Windoze OS and the stability is there so that the only need to reboot, is generally when New Hardware needs to be installed.

Try that using the New Technology (NT) or some other 2000 OS!

Linux, it's not just for fun anymore!

Just thought I would toss this in, that Mandrake is pretty much a prettied up and optimized version of Redhat, ie - all the RPM functionality is there, albiet it is a pain to develop on it because a bunch of the libraries aren't sane, and a lot of the config information is hidden in strange places, but once you find it, it's not a big deal. (example: the httpd stuff is in /etc/httpd/ and is split up into about 4 diffrent files)
I have run Mandrake on some *really* cheap hardware (Celery 500 / 256 megs of RAM) and had it running so hard that the motherboard IRQ handler couldn't take the load and would cause a kernel panic occasionally. (verified by myself, and a few other computer / hardware buffs), but for the most part it ran like a champ, serving a peak of 12 megs of web traffic. This a great OS and HP would be wise to look into it IMHO.

hey, where's debian? it installs on PARISC?
I've just tested Suze 7.1 and it's real nice.

PS: HP also turned Linus down on a job offer.
