I need install a RH ES 2.1 in one ML370 with smart array 641 controller.
When I boot from RH CD, it not recognize the smart array and show this legend: no valid device were found on which to create new filesystems ...
The server has two disks and they are mirrored in RAID1, and is created the logical volume.
Any idea ??

If you choose to use the disk druid has a nice point and click way of setting up RAID 1. If you choose to use Disk Druid or its replacement in the install, it will all be point and click.

I've done it a few times with RH 7 and 9.

The documents in the prior post are excellent.

You need to make sure you have the CD around for the smart array, so you can configure it the way you want. You can probably do the RAID 1 on the array. That would be hardware raid and that outperforms software raid in most instances.

SEP

but if I do the RAID 1 with druid, the RAID is by soft and not by hard.
or not ?

Yes sir,

Its one or the other.

The hardware raid is more difficult to set up but might lead to better performance, especially with ext2 and ext3 filesystems.

I've been using software raid for years, and its proved up to the task.

SEP

Yes, it'll be software raid.
But if your card handles hardware raid, depending on its brand it should relay software raid to handle it directly, once install is completed. But I do not know how 641 behaves on that point...

J

Andrew, you should start a new thread for this.

In any case, the instructions with the driver-diskette downloads should tell you exactally how to do it (usually involves going into an 'expert' or 'driver' installation mode).

I've not use ES so I can't comment directly.
