In my accounts -- IPV6 is still in planning stages. It may likely be done in phases before booting out completely IPV4.

Hi there,

Just wanted to ask your opinion here:

Are you aware of or do you think there will be organizations (as opposed to individuals/private use) who will go to some (or even a medium or large) amount of effort to have one or more computer systems (physical and/or virtual) with ONLY IPv6 communication enabled and IPv4 communication deliberately disabled? This year or next year? IPv6 does after all (at least theoretically) offer better security than IPv4.

All informed and constructive responses will be generously rewarded with points!

Thanks, Christian

I think whole countries will force the usage of IPv6 in the near future so that every network equipment has its own uniq IP that can be traced/blocked/manipulated. China anyone?

According to the big efforts that are made to record VOIP communication, this would also be an ideal candidate for IPv6' reduced privacy.

My (totally uninformed) opinion: there are still far to many IPv4 only devices in every organization for this to happen any time soon (10 years).

Anyway, here are two nice articles from Ars Technica:

'How should my organization approach the IPv6 transition?'
http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2011/02/ask-ars-how-should-my-organization-approach-the-ipv6-transition.ars

'There is no Plan B: why the IPv4-to-IPv6 transition will be ugly'
http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2010/09/there-is-no-plan-b-why-the-ipv4-to-ipv6-transition-will-be-ugly.ars
