Knows anyone, is it possible and how it works to create just one g4u boot floppy instead of two, just for restoring a hard disk image over the network?

Sure.

Take the source codes of the NetBSD kernel, any necessary libraries and the g4u application. Rip out all the functionality you won't absolutely need, and optimize everything for minimal size.

If you're really good, you *might* be able to get it all to fit on a single floppy. Maybe.

Yes, this requires programming skills and a lot of work.

But why are you still using floppies in year 2011? Back at the turn of the century, floppies and floppy drives were already unreliable legacy products, manufactured as cheaply as possible. You should use a CD-R or a USB stick instead.

The problem is we have really old workstations with floppy drives, there is no CD-ROM and USB are not bootable.
