For permanent configuration you should create a file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0 (:1 and so on) with the following context:

DEVICE=eth0:0
BOOTPROTO=none
ONBOOT=yes
NETWORK=10.0.1.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=10.0.1.27

In fact, you can copy ifcfg-eth0 file and edit "DEVICE" and "IPADDR" fields.

Also you can ad another IP address to you NIC called alias. If you want to add an alias to your system go ahead with the procedure which the other guys sent, if you have a cluster and want to add a vip to it, please let us know about the cluster.
