Converting from /etc./passwd to Fedora(Netscape) directory server

Shalom Friends,

Just installed the Fedora Directory server on RH ES 4.0.

A very nice little system for user management.

I would like to convert some of my existing /etc/passwd users to ldap format.

I have two options:
1) Do it manually and conduct a password reset for all users.
2) Use a utility and not conduct a password reset for all users.

Questions:
Is option 1 my only option?
If option 2 will work, I need a specific procedure that works with netscape directory server.

I'm thinking there is no way to do the password conversion due to security concerns. Just need confirmation.

Another question:

I'm making the conversion very slowly. I will initially authenticate users on my application cluster using /etc/passwd. Some of the user dat a will be in a storage cluster that will be first converted to ldap via the directory server.

The reasoning is there are applications that I wish to move slowly to back end authentication. Switching squirrelmail for example to ldap configuration is a production crisis I don't want to have until I'm ready.

Sounds like I can use the regular ldap tools, if installed to handle the conversion. Yes?
