Back-to-back connections between NICs requires a cross-over cable _unless_ the NICs are Gigabit Ethernet. Those are the only ones where "Auto MDIX" support is mandatory per the specification. It is optional for 100BT and I'm not even sure it exists for 10BT.

If you want to connect two systems and do not have Gigabit cards, or a cross-over cable, you must use either a switch or a hub.

Similarly, if you want to connect two _switches_ (iirc or hubs or a hub to a switch) back-to-back prior to Gigabit Ethernet you need a cross-over cable unless one or the other has (Auto)MDIX support.

3c590 is a 10MB card. If the switch is 100MB (and not 10/100MB) then it won't work with a 10MB card.
Regards.

Shalom,

Its still possible to find 10 BaseT hubs out there in resale shops and such.

If you have a cisco switch, have it configured for 10 BaseT manual.

SEP

>>> If I connect a cross cable the network will start working. <<<

Looks to me like something is badly wired either in your NIC or your hub. Try to connect your PC to another hub.
