Hi

Like stuart had mentioned you need to download the driver from the broadcom site and install it,once that is done the system will recognize the nic card.

Rgds

HGN
Hi,
I installed Red hat 8. My network card is broadcom NetXtreme. I tried to give it an IP, but when trying to activate it, always have this message "Cannot activate network device eth0". I execute the command : lsmod; tg3 wasn't in the output. when executing "modprobe tg3" I get this message "/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/derivers/net/tg3.0:init_module: No such device"
Any idea?

Regards,
ziad

First a question. Why are you using such an old Distribution?

RH8 didn't have (good) support for the Broadcom series of network cards.

Go to Broadcom's website and get a more recent version of their 'bcm5700' driver (which I believe covers this card), compile it for the kernel you are using (instructions provided with the source), and use that.

Or better yet, just use a newer distribution (FC3 or FC4!)

The 5700 driver is definitely better that the tg3 driver. Get it from the BroadCom site as suggested. All instructions are on the site as well.

Ziad,

Please don't use Red Hat Linux 8. This is very old distro and not supported.

Try Fedora Core 4. You can download it for free from http://fedora.redhat.com/download/

If you want a Debian like distro you can use Ubuntu -- go to http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ and click on Shipit -- they will ship to you CDs for free.

-Ross
