I have this ZyXEL Elite 2864 modem. I can dial out and the modem passes all diags. The carrier gets detected but no luck in connecting. The ppp0 interface is not coming up and I am unable to ping a remote host. Does this have something to do with the COM port? Is the RS232 interface busted? How do I check it using a simple test?

Usually there's two COM ports. Did you try with the other one?

Ciao
Claudio

Tell me what distribution of Linux is running.

Many have a GUI hardware browser, and you should take a look and see if your modem is properly detected.

Then go to the manufacturer site and see if tehre is an updated linux driver.

SEP

Caludio: Tnx for the suggestion. Yes, the ppp0 device is coming up when the modem is connected to COM1. But what is up with COM2? Is there a simple test to check and confirm that the COM2 port is still not bust?

SEP: Debian GNU/Linux with no GUI. I have no GUI hardware detection stuff. Only pppconfig to help me with its small port probe routine. Any suggestion for a port loopback test?

Tnx anyway.

You say 'The carrier gets detected', and this let me think that there is some
kind of informations exchange between the linux machine and the modem. Does the
modem lights blink? If it is so, the COM port shouldn't be broken.

I remember that once I had some IRQ-conflicts between COM port and an old ISA
network card (non plug-and-play), and I was able to do a 'test modem' (through a graphical interface
application, like kppp) but I wasn't able to get the connection. I don't
remember how I solved this problem, sorry. Looking the BIOS configuration should
help.

Ciao
Claudio

Hi,

There is a simple test. Disconnect the attached cable to the COM2 port, with minicom or something similar go to this port (probably /dev/ttyS1), with a metallic thing (a screw driver or a paper clip) make connection betwen pins 2 and 3, then type some characters. You must receive the characters on the screen.

Bojan

Claudio: Yes, the carrier gets detected while the modem is connected on COM2 but the ppp0 device does not come up. In minicom, all tests respond, I can even escape whilst online and check the link status. But the ppp0 interface ....

Bojan: Tnx and a great help for suggesting the test method.

I swapped and connected the mouse on COM2. The mouse does not work on COM2 too.
