Sendmail connection Timed Out

hi;
I have a redhat Advance server 2.1 with sendmail 8.11.6.9 installed. only very few of the mails are send out successfully. other mails are spooling up in mqueue with "satus =defered Connection timed out with xyz.com". If manually flushed (with sendmail -q -v ) only few mails are send out. can anyone help me in this regards.

the /var/log/maillog looklike

makeconnection (xxx.yyy.com [x.y.z.zx]) failed: Connection timed out with xxx.yyy.com

The server you are relaying through could be overloaded or your QoS could be doing something... If you are getting successfull sessions elsewhere, than look to network related issues.

Try this diagnostic, it will help you with the problem.

sendmail -v -d38.2 targetaddress@aol.com

You are aware of the mailq command to see if your mail is even getting on the relay server?

Hi,

First of all find out whether your ISP link's bandwidth is overloaded . This can be done by running MRTG or looking at the interface statistics of your Internet router.

If it is overloaded , try to get the bandwidth increased by paying some money to the ISP.

As of now do this

Edit sendmail.cf file and Increase this paramter

eg:-
Present parameter:

O Timeout.connect=1m

Change it to: ( Whathever value there + 4m )

O Timeout.connect=5m

Restart sendmail daemon. Come back with results.

sendmail -v -d38.2 xxxuser@aol.com
seq_map_parse(aliases.files, )
hash_map_open(mailertable, /etc/mail/mailertable.db, 0)

it hangs after that. what this command actually does, and what do u mean by -d38.2. PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

I tried increasing connection timed to 5m but in vain.

Hi,

What's your ISP line Bandwidth ?.

IS your router a cisco router ?

if yes , Then can you paste the output of show interface command taken during the sendmail conection timed out error.

MRTG is a free traffic graphing perl script which uses SNMP . it can run in windows and also unix.

Thank u for you help. I have got some lead in my problem. If I restart the interfaces and force dequeue the mail sendmail -q -v mail are going and again stops after some time with connection timed out. I'm installing MRTG in few days time.
