Be sure to create a swap area.
Use ext2 or 3 for creating file systems.
Create a '/' area and check the box that says
'primary partition'.
Install everything if you have enough space.
During install it will ask you to set the firewall level. Check 'no firewall'. This will eliminate many problems for a first time install. You can close the gaps later, post install.
Install 'workstation' or 'server' which ever fits your needs. Both work just fine.

Have a ball.

First of all you should read the README and Release Notes from the first CD.
Afterwards just follow the instructions. Simple put, boot from the first CD and answer the questions

First of all, I would take a look at why you might be installing the AS build and whether or not it is suitable to your needs if you're doing it for the first time. The original AS build of 2.1 is a very similar installation to the 7.2 and 7.3 builds.

If you're going to go ahead with an AS installation, some of the key things to remember are:

* Create your swap partition to be 2x physical memory...this is a general rule of thumb for installations.

* Do not use any firewall options for installation.

* Install the minimal amount of packages that you need. Determine ahead of time what your system will be used for, and select the packages accordingly. If you don't know what a package is for, ask.
NEVER select 'Install all packages'

* If it is a true server build, be sure to specify a sizeable partition for /var for logging purposes, or plan on configuring the syslogd.conf to redirect the logs to an applicable partition with the appropriate size.
