A couple of weeks ago, I installed redhat 8 to my compaq desktop. It had been a while since I'd played with Linux, but this was the easiest install I've ever had. After a couple of weeks of using it, I decided to install it to my Pavillion ZE 1250. The install went surprisingly well. If I want to use it as a non-networked device, it's fine. I can't get it to play with the built in lan/modem piece or with pcmcia.
I'm far from being a linux guru and there's very little that I can find so far in the way of documentation or user experience feedback with Red Hat 8 because it's so new. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me.
Thanks.

Hi,

Just wanted to ask if you are using the redhat kernel compiled with pcmcia support for your machine.

Redhat has a set of customized kernels, one of which is called the kernel-pcmcia-cs-*.

Below is a link from the redhat site.
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/custom-guide/s1-kernel-preparing.html

Sorry if you know this already.

Regards
Balaji

Hi!

See in the bios if there's any option to change the pmcia settings or the onboard lan, see if the pcmcia service is starting in the services. If does not work try to install Mandrake 9, could be a Red Hat kernel problem, i remember you that there's an update to the kernel for the Red Hat 8

The bios on this laptop is surprisingly shy on options. I downloaded Mandrake 9 and installed it last night. I didn't have any problems with it at all. It recognized the built in lan/modem piece and the pcmcia.
I wouldn't mind trying redhat again at some point. I'll probably wait until it's had more user feedback, though.

By the way, the only chipset ont pcmcia card supported by redhat by now are the Databook TCIC/2 and the intel i82365. If your chipset is another one, then everhting is clear !
You can still go to tsx-11.mit.edu in /pub/linux/packages/laptops/ where you can find usefull material, or on David Hinds's site (cb-iris.stanford.edu/pub/pcmcia/) who worked a lot on this problem.
I supposed you tried kudzu anyway to detect your card...
Hope it helps.
