      <description>Loop back interface (as in 'ifconfig lo' yes?) ?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;It's the way to say "This is myself" regardless of hardware, or devices.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;In a networking world, you should always be able to rely upon one fact:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;loopback device = 127.0.0.1 = localhost&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If you need to talk to yourself on the network (there are a number of situations where this is a good idea), you can use this.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;In a non-networking environment, this device also allows you to use Network based operations, as the Loopback device initilizes the TCP stack.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;As for the reasons behind why it was created, you'd probably have to read through the TCP/IP RFC's to find out.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;.. probably not the best of explanations, but I hope it helps somewhat .. Possibly someone who's done more detailed work on TCP and IP stacks could give a better reasoning ..</description>
