I installed the latest bcm5700 driver (6.0.2A-1) as per the installation directions, changed the alias in modules.conf to point to it and all was well (lsmod showed bcm5700 instead of tg3). I then decided to install the cciss driver from Compaq (currently was using the one provided by the kernel). The driver version is 2.4.44-2. The install went fine and I rebooted. <BR /><BR />The network appeared to start properly but I knew there was a problem when it couldn't sync to the timeserver and eventually times-out.
