I'm assuming that you are using the Samba server as the logon server/PDC for your domain.
If that's the case and it's working beautifully from the Win2k box, then you need to look at the networking setup on the Win98 machine. The Network properties box will have a drop down menu for initial logon serveice (or prefered logon service, I forget which and haven't a machine here to check) This needs to be Microsoft Networking (as opposed to Windows). This will tell the Win98 box to try to authenticate to the PDC (your samba server).

Of course, Microsoft Networking has to be installed on the Win98 machine (default for W98 SE).

hth...
Mark

Does any one know how to get samba and win98 to play nicel? When on Win2k, on accessing samba fs, it prompts for login id and password, where as on win98, it prompt for password only. It seems that win98 assumed the default login id windows, not the login id of samba server. How do you get it to prompt for logon id and password? Thanks.

You should just need to change the 'Primary Network Logon' model on Win '98 to 'Client for Microsoft Netorks'.

This will force you to enter a Username and Password pair whenever you start he '98 machine up. It will use the username entered here to authenticate against any other machine's services (ie. Samba on a Linux box, or NT Server shares).

Logging into a 'Domain' isn't necessary however in most circumstances (depending on how you've set Samba up can make a difference however, if the shares model is set to 'user' or to 'share'. Read the samba documentation for the differences).

Hope this helps a bit..

This RH samba server is not PDC, it's sharing a directory. When accessing this directory win98 only prompts for password where as win2k prompts for login-id and password. Any idea why? Thanks.

"It will use the username entered here to authenticate against any other machine's services"..

Expansion:

'98 DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO USE A USERNAME OTHER THAN THE ONE YOU SIGNED INTO IT WITH!

Unlike NT/2k, you cannot specify a different username! This is a pure limitation of the Lan Manager routines under the Windows '9x OS'.

Nothing can be done about it from what I've seen and experienced.

None that I've heard of I'm afraid. And yea, I agree. The limitations in Windows do blow. Oh well, thats why I use it as my Desktop, and not as my servers!
