But using it to protect your system from attacks or unwanted connections works great without causing a breakdown in communication with those allowed to connect. If you have machines on the local network that ipchains has port forwarding for the connection will not notice any degredation in service. Nor will any machine on your local network passing to the internet through the firewall machine.
