Ok I found the answer by the old RTFD method :o)

While XWindows is running press Ctrl + Alt and + or - on the numeric keypad. This resizes the screen immediately. Resizing uses the XF86Config-(Computer Name) file in /etc/X11.

I just installed SUSE 9.0 Professional distribution of Linux accepting the defaults and I find that the screen size is so large that the text on many web sites is too small to read.

Is there a way to resize the screen without re-installing ?

I take it you mean in X-Windows.

There should be a tool in SuSE (I don't use it, so I'm unsure what it's called) to change the resolution of the display adapter.

Failing that, you can tweak the X configuration manually (/etc/X11/XF86Config), under the "Screen" section.

I found XF86Config in the X11 directory but they were not execuitable files. They look like program generated config files.

I've been running a RedHat Linux 7.2 server for a couple of years and am familiar with the RedHat XConfigurator (spell ?) resize tool but so far haven't found one in this SuSE distro.

I'll keep looking; Thanks for your response.

Hello Vernon,

for future reference, pretty much all of the system configuration tasks can be performed using yast2 (yet another setup tool). You can find it in the startmenu (SuSE --> System) or
invoke it as root directly from a terminal as /sbin/yast2.

All the best,

Martin

In SuSE the default tool to configure your X was SAX2.
To resize your X while you are using it can something like:
CTRL-ALT-<+key>
or
CTRL-ALT-<-key>

+ and - key from the numiric-keyboard.

Regards,

Peter
One other remark.
When installing SuSE, in the first splash screen you get, you can select the default resolution of the screen by using the Function key's. If nothing is selected within +/- 10 seconds it uses a default.

Regards,

Peter

Hello,
if you can change screen resolution by 'like windoze', you can use "krandrtray" app.
Use Menu -> Utilities -> Desktop -> Screen Resize & Rotate.
Will run on background in "system tray"

pa.
