      <description>I would try and directly connect to your modem using "cu" or whatever and issue "AT&amp;amp;f" to reset to factory default, then "ATT" to select tone dialling and then phone someone with "ATD&lt;TELEPHONE number=""&gt; just to make sure all is well.&lt;/TELEPHONE&gt;</description>

      <description>Sometimes this is due to the gain being too low in the telephone line itself.  If so, you'll need to contact your telephone service provider. Can you try a different modem to test?</description>

      <description>You should look for the docs for the specific modem.  Each vendor has their own extensions to the basic Hayes command set, and each product may have different registers that do different things.  I really don't think that's standardized.  So knowing what kind of hardware you actually have would help you in this case.&lt;BR /&gt;</description>
