All,
I am wondering if any one have successfully compiled and installed kernel 2.6.2 on RH9? If so, did you have to upgrade modutils? I had tried kernel 2.6.0 and 2.6.1. But during boot up, it failed to load modules. I believe you need to upgrade modutils to get over this problem. My concern is, if I do upgrade modutils, then will I still be able to use 2.4.24 ( will the upgraded modutils be compatible with previous kernel version?). Thanks.

I have compiled and am running my Debian GNU box on Linux v2.6.2. In order to compile and run this 2.6.x series kernel, you have to have a minimum version of 0.9.10 of module-init-tools. Modutils has been replaced by the module-init-tools package.Under Debian, you can have both modutils and module-init-tools on the same system, so that one can run both the 2.4.x and 2.6.x series kernels.You can probably get the new module-init-tools package for RH9 and it should co-exist peacefully. You will be able to run your 2.4.24 kernel too. Please read the Changes doc inside the kernel source tree. Hth....

That version is WAY too low in the last digit for me to trust my business to it.

When its .18 or .20 maybe I will be thinking about it.

2.6.2 is a good kernel. in fact the kernel has been in pretty good shape through the last few releases of 2.5. now you cannot run it in production simply because if you have support with for your distro it will be invalid when you run 2.6 that you rolled by yourself. There are no 2.6 distro's out there yet (ok, you can have debian, gentoo, ... but they don't offer the kind of support you are looking for i guess).
no use waiting for release .18 or something, it seems 2.6 is not going on the same bumpy road as 2.4 did.
all i want to say is, go ahead and use 2.6 on your own pc (or test box), get the feeling already and by the time the big distros include it, it will be old news to you.

Not only modutils ! Plenty of other things have to be fixed.
Tried it for fun, it works OK, but it's a one way road. Once on 2.6, no way back to 2.4 (or full reinstall).

Thanks. all I think I will try it on my test box. Just wondering, 2.6.2 should support Asynchronous IO, do you know where I should look to make sure this option is turn on? Thanks.

Ran 2.6.0 -> 2.6.2

I use 2.6.2 as my stable kernel.. Works great! .. and is more responsive!

The best part of 2.6.x is that it supports my chipset so that I can stick the hard drives in 32bit DMA mode.
