If it's not supported by HP, I'm pretty sure it is not supported by RedHat either.

Make sure you have the right Redhat install. Redhat has the Itanium version of Linux. Check with HP as well. I have my Itanium rx5670 running on Redhat AS 2.1 for Itanium.

You do need a special Itanium distro. Also you can not install any binary RPMs for IA32 systems successfully on Itanium. You either have to locate special IA64 RPMs or compile from sources for anything that is not part of the base distro.

Greetings, Martin

There are Itanium installations of Linux available at Red Hat. The stock i386 disks won't do it, you'll need 64 bit disks.

http://www.redhat.com

SEP

What do you mean by a special Itanium distro ?

Again is the rx4610 a supported platform ?

Also, i downloaded an cd image from HP for setting up linux on itanium servers. However, when i try to boot off the first cd in the linux pack its just stalls indefinately and will never install ? I need to understand whats going wrong ? How do i determine if i have the correct set of cds for linux AS 2.1. I think they might be the x86 version but aint sure.

Also, the instructions tell me to if "If your Itanium will not boot from Red Hat Linux Advanced Server CD 1, you may need to boot from an LS-120 diskette"

Whats an LS 120 diskette and will this help ?

Hello,

an LS120 is one of the many would-be successors to the standard 3.5'' floppy that never took of since it became much cheaper and more convenient to burn a CD instead. I would not give too much on this support matrix since it does list only the latest and greatest offerings from hp, not "legacy" servers like yours ;-)

You do have to make sure you have the right distro. If you got ready made CDs they should have a phrase like (for Itanium or for IA64) on it. If you do download the stuff from Redhat they do support 7 different HW platforms currently, so make sure you select Itanium.

Greetings, Martin

Even though older servers are sometimes dropped from lists, that is not the case here. This server uses an older generation Itanium chip and it is not supported.

Since Linux is comminuty backed, a version to run it might be available.
