N4000 and HSG80 connection problems

We are trying to setup a compaq hsg80 disk array to an N4000 running HP-UX 11.0. The N4000 is using an A5158A fibre card and is being connected point to point with the HSG80 disk controller (no Fibre switches) All units on the HSG80 have been setup but HP-UX does not see any units.

ioscan -funC fc shows the fibre card correctly.
fcmsutil /dev/td0 shows the card to be in a private_loop and online.

a SHOW CONN command on the HSG80 always shows the A5158A card as being offine but does pick up the WWN correctly so we know it is seeing the card.

We have installed all the Fibre and SCSI drivers into the kernel and rebooted the n4000.

Try running

ioscan -fn
insf -eioscan -fn

then see if the devices show up. If not, please post the output of the "ioscan -fn" as an ATTACHMENT (so we can see all of the pretty spaces and column formatting).

Just a thought:

Some FC disk arrays needs more time during initialization. In this case, you need to start the disk array well before you start the server. I 've seen that problem before.

I think I can remember that you had to specify an offset when configuring the connection on the HSG80 but can not remember the value. You will have to specify the connected OS as well. What does the HSG80 manual say about that?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to everyone. I had to switch to 2nd shift.

attached is the ioscan -fn
The fibre card in question is at 0/4/0/0. The other card is not currently connected to anything.

I have also checked the HSG80 and set the controllers to SCSI-2 mode per the HSG80 manual. The host connection is set to HP. If I delete the connection and let the controller recreate the connection it will show as WINNT.

The big problem appears to be that the connection on the HSG always appears as "offline".

If I don't get it by tomorrow I will try connecting through a switch. I had tried this a few weeks ago and was able to see the disk drives.

According to the docs on the (former) Compaq site, you need to have this product:

HSG80 Solution Software for HP-UX, P/N 222325-B23

Also from their site:
ACS 8.6-4 requires 8.6 Solution kits, one per Operating System per SAN.

Last I heard, the New HP isn't yet offically supporting HSG80 products on HP-UX (they need to be certified).

I would think that the above software would help.

Also, verify that you're at the latest firmware (ACS) revision (8.6-4), and that the controllers are configured to the appropriate topology and hostmode (loop or fabric, and HP mode)

The point to point connections just didn't work. We moved over to a McData switch and can now see some of the drives. (The 1st 8). This appears to be a restriction with the HSG80 and HP. I will look into the software that Vincent mentioned and see if it helps any.

Ah... A couple of more hints for you:

When you physically setup point-to-point connections (host cabled directly to disk array without switch or hub) you *must* use FC/AL (loop) topology. This may be what your problem was when not using a switch. (I should have known to ask about what topology you were using! It's a very common error)

Also, there's a patch available for HP-UX to get it to "see" more than 8 LUNs. Offhand, I caon't remember the patch # - anyone?
