If your current 36GB disks are 1" universal drives, then I do not see any Physical/Technical reason for this not to work.

A Backup would be strongly recommended just in case you have to initialize the drives in order to get them functional. Plus you should be running backups anyways. :-)

Will your data stay intact? That depends on the driver/controller software.

Hi All,
We have a Proliant DL380 G2 server running Windows 2000 Server (SP4). The server is currently configured with an integrated Smart Array 5i Controller with 4*36GB disks. These four disks are set up as two RAID 1 arrays containing two drives each (Array A (system) & Array B (data)). Note, all these drives are on the same channel.
We are planning to install a dual channel Smart Array 5302/128 array controller and move array B (2*36GB data partition) to this controller i.e. in a SmartWorks 4354 split shelf. Hence, we would like to place the two drives of Array B onto two seperate channels of the enclosure.
Is it possible to move the drives to the new controller and configure them on two different channels without performing a backup and restore?
Anyone, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
