My D380 has 3 internal disks. One's bad. I pulled it and it is a Hewlett Packard ST39175LC. Looking that up it turns out it's a Seagate ST39175LC. Question: Will a regular ol' Seagate work as a replacement or do I need the "HP" version? The cost difference is $95 for a Seagate and about $700 for the HP, so you see my issue.

HP has its own version of the firmware. There is no guarantee that a non-HP drive will work properly (it is not tested, so nobody knows). I guess there is also a difference in hardware warranty.

Have you checked if your old drive is still covered?

Its all a farce..... it's dependant on fristly what RAID your system is configured to... if you have 3 HDDS then my guess is you are running RAID5. A third party hard drive will not invalidate the warranty on the server as it states on the HP website.
you just can't guaruntee whether the drives will perform PFA. If your in the states try www.procom.com if in the uk try www.dataworlduk.com for cost effective third party solutions including pluggable caddy and good warranties.
