Adding an on-line spare

I have configured a RAID 5 array on a DL380 on a 6i controller with 4 disks and am using all 4 disks. I now want an on-line spare, and realise i cannot make one of them an on-line spare so wandered if i could simply put another disk in the server and add that to the array as the on-line spare without any disruption to my novell partition.

I'm not sure if the on-line spare actually is part of the array or not.

Yes, you can, and It is not part of any array until one disk fails.
